Via this offer on WHT, VPSRepublic has some some amazingly cheap VPS deals, starting at $3.50/month (!!). You get
- 128MB guaranteed / 256MB burstable memory
- 1GB storage
- 75GB monthly data transfer
- OpenVZ
- Debian / Ubuntu / CentOS / Fedora / Gentoo / OpenSUSE
Their standard plan also fits into the criteria at $5.50/month with 256MB/512MB of memory. Their servers are at KevWorks in Los Angeles. Not sure about the control panel but as their site is hosted on an LxAdmin host, I presume it would be HyperVM based. Their domain was only registered early this month so caveat emptor. You can find out more about the owner by googling around.
echoServers.com, whom I wrote about in February, has recently recently upgraded their plan (which I suspect has actually been a while) so that for $5.99/month, you can get 96MB of guaranteed memory for your OpenVZ VPS instead of 64MB.

The 3 free months on 1 year prepaid deal is still available. According to the data center page they are now in Chicago and Los Angeles.
BoxVPS has some interesting low-end plans. For $6/month you can get the following OpenVZ VPS:
- 64MB guaranteed memory
- 2GB storage
- 50GB monthly data transfer or 512kbps unmetered
- CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Ubuntu, Slackware, etc
Server is at Phoenix AZ with System Solutions Inc. While the monthly cost for the low end plan is $6, if you prepay in advance it is actually $7 (for example, $84 for 1 year)! Not sure how it works out in math as I thought prepaying ought to be cheaper.
Via this offer on WHT, SuperBytes is having a low-end VPS plan for $5.10/month with coupon ($6/month without).
- 64MB guaranteed / 128MB burstable memory
- 6GB storage
- 60GB monthly data transfer
- OpenVZ + HyperVM
- Many Linux distros
Their website is traced to this Toronto dedicated server company, however from a quick lookup SuperBytes seems to be a 2 man team from UK.
This PaidHosts VPS plan is only available via this WHT offer. For $5/month you can get the following OpenVZ VPS:
- 64MB guaranteed/128MB burstable
- 500Mhz dedicated CPU
- 3GB storage
- 30GB monthly data transfer
- HyperVM/CentOS/LxAdmin
- Fully Managed
No idea where the server is from their website, although their main site is traced to BurstNET’s data center in Scranton, PA. Do note that by posting their offer here does not mean I am endorsing this provider. In the light of yesterday’s post, I might even say stay away and watch in a distance for at least 6 months, because
- I basically don’t trust any low end provider on BurstNET.
- Domain registered in May this year, with domain privacy turned on.
- NS1, NS2 and the main site itself are (possibly) on the same cPanel box. No reputable provider would do that.
- Heaps of proxy sites on that server. That would give you a bit of background of their operation.
- Finally, VPS plan page is not even available on their website.
I am sure I can dig up more if I spend 30 minutes on it but just by looking at some of the health metrics of their main domain is enough to put me off. The same can be said about some providers that I have listed here before, and always do your homework.
One aim for running this website is to find the cheapest root you can find on the Internet (legally, of course
For me I just want to have my own little box that I can do whatever I want, and install whatever software I want on it. I do not have a big budget for the playground so I am setting an artificial limit of USD$7/month for virtual servers — a price point that you probably cannot get decent shared hosting packages.
However, one problem of being cheap is — you usually get what you paid for, i.e. cheap service. And I am not talking about unmanaged service where you are responsible to set up every piece of software and are responsible to keep the box up-to-date. I am talking about cheap & nasty hosts. Some of them are probably under-age with no previous sysadmin experience. Some put artificial limit on your server to explicitly cripple them to completely unusable. Some never reply your support tickets, when your server went off-line every second day. Some even accuse you for running warez or malware in order to boot you off, when all you have is securely patched WordPress blog site. (Okay, I know mentioning WordPress and security is a bit of oxymoron but hopefully you’ve got my point…)

- 64MB guaranteed / 96MB burstable memory
- 5GB storage
- 50GB monthly data transfer
- Various Linux distributions
Their main website resolved to BurstNET in Scranton, PA. In the WHT offers it does mention that “Please note that these prices won’t be this low forever - so be quick!” — and it appears the VPS costs $6/month + $4.99 setup fee, or $90/year ($7.50/month).
Via this WHT offer, VPS Empire, a “week-old” VPS provider according to the domain registration, is offering some dirt cheap VPS plans. For $6.95/month you get the following OpenVZ VPS:
- 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
- 5GB storage
- 100GB monthly data transfer
- CentOS/Debian/Fedora Core

Yup. Under 7 bucks a month for 256MB memory guaranteed — too good to be true? Digging up the poster on WHT I think the owner might be UK based, but the server is with GNAX in Atlanta, Georgia.
Update: It appears that VPSEmpire has completely updated its plans to something completely different. The low end now is $4.95/month with 128MB memory, 5GB storage and 50GB data transfer/month.
Via this WHT offer, sell WHM is offering some cheap virtual servers powered by OpenVZ and HyperVM. For $4.95/month you get:

- 5GB storage
- 100GB monthly data transfer
- OpenVZ/HyperVM
DC is in Atlanta, Georgia (inside the GNAX DC). Unfortunately there’s no stock available at the moment. Do note that domain has only been registered since December last year so very much a newish provider.
Via this WHT offer, Five Minute VPS is offering some incredibly cheap VPS plans — all deployable under 5 minutes. For $5/month you get:
- 128MB guaranteed memory (256MB burstable)
- 5GB storage
- 20GB data transfer/month

All servers are in San Fransisco Bay area in the SVTIX datacenter. Might be New Zealand based with their +64 support number. They are actually subsidiary of Netxservers which also offers cheap VPS.
Update: Five Minute VPS has been sold to PC Core Web Hosting and all low end plans have been removed.
