Prgmr.com – $5 64MB Xen VPS + Free First Month

Tags: , , , Date/Time: April 1, 2008 @ 12:35 am

Prgmr.com Prgmr.com has been around offering Linux and NetBSD Xen VPS for a while but last time I checked they had temporarily suspended new sign ups. Good news is — they are back! You can now sign up to their Xen VPS offerings, including their low-end $5/month VPS in Herakles DC in Sacramento.

  • 64MB memory
  • 10GB 5GB storage
  • 20GB monthly transfer
  • Debian 3/4, Ubuntu 7.04, CentOS 4/5, FedoraCore, Slackware, NetBSD

Currently they are offering a time limited special — first month is free, because “prgmr.com is still something of a mess”.

Update: Prgmr.com is now offering 5GB instead of 10GB of storage because of mirroring. Doing RAID 1 is a Good ThingTM — you get 2x the read speed, but most importantly, a failed drive does not take hours (or days!) of downtime.

    From their website:
Please Note, currently I am only installing CentOS 5.1 and Debian 4.0 distributions.

I’ve been using prgmr for about 3 weeks now and am impressed with the service, please note he has changed the plans around again.

Also one other thing, it is now hosted at HE.net in
    their Fremont-2 Datacenter.

The first month free deal is over… and I’ve reduced disk and transfer further. However, for $6/month, you can get 128M ram and 3GB disk, which I believe is a much better deal, even with the reduced disk and transfer. 128M is a lot more ram than 64M.

Yes, at the moment, I’ll only install CentOS5 or Debian4. I do use PyGRUB so if you want to muck with it, you can install something else. In fact, in the PyGrub menu for the Debian image, I have a NetBSD-CURRENT netinstall kernel.
