RethinkVPS - $2.08 128MB OpenVZ VPS

Via this WHT offer. RethinkVPS has just launched — domain registered in late October with privacy-guarded WHOIS and adjacent NS that’s typical to our new providers. But anyway, they do have pretty good offers. The WHT offer page shows $5.95/month for their “VPS1.0” package (using this ordering link. However it turns out to be $2.08/month after clicking through. It comes with

  • 128MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • Unmetered bandwidth at 100Mbps
  • 2 IP addresses
  • DDoS protection
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

From their network page it seems to be a copy/paste of BurstNet’s description, where their own website is hosted. Besides WHOIS privacy and bad NS configuration, I think owner’s history might be also a reason why this “too good to be true” offer needs to be ignored. “jonbeard” posted this offer on WHT, whose website is currently showing PHP error. And that’s the same Jon Beard who started StriveVPS.com that did not last even a month before perishing in the dead pool last month.

    $5.95/month, not $2.08?

  3. 128 with OpenVZ? Really?

Very expensive, since for like $5, you can get 512 MB from BURSTNET.

  5. @LEA – Maybe you should put up a warning on them given the owners iffy past? This same posting just came up in our IRC channel where a customer was giggling about their 100% uptime claim, with a link showing much much lower (likely from the burstnet power issue recently).

  6. Add to the uptime lie some abject confusion (on the same page, even) as to whether their refund policy is 30 days or just 7, and I give them sixty days or less before winding up in the dead pool. :)

Perhaps you would do better to worry about the uptime of your own webhosting site that’s hosted on an old desktop computer in the computer store you work at rather than posting mis-information on your blog slamming the competition, moron.

I don’t really see how criticizing DNS settings (most of his posts) = misinformation?
I don’t know anything about his uptime (it was up when I visited it), but how do you know how it’s hosted? It’s behind CloudFlare and from IPv6 traceroute appears to be a dedi at EGIHosting.

Further digging makes me think it’s in one of Frantech’s IP ranges; the number of hops makes me think it’s not a VPS, but I could be wrong.

  9. Hello All –

Please be advised that Jon Beard is not the owner of RethinkVPS.

Give us a try I promise you will not be disappointed. We offer great support and powerful servers.

We are a new company yes, However I myself (the owner) ran a very successful Game Server Business before selling that. Our staff has a very strong knowledge of running very efficient servers.

Jon Beard is simply part of my sales staff and has been posting our current specials on WHT.

I look forward to seeing you as a client and hope we can better serve you.

FYI…There may be some coupons launching soon to get prices down to those rock bottom prices you were talking about!

  11. Its not that we are “down”.

We are suffering from a very strong Ddos. We are currently working on isolating the incident and blocking from our servers.

Funny man you are, your Ad says “DDoS protection” and yet you can’t even protect yourself? What a failer.

      November 30, 2010 @ 1:25 pm | Reply
      • There is only so much DDos Protection can do. However we actually were working on strengthening and hardening of our main box that host our site as this attack came in. Thus resulting in the firewalls being down and hitting hard.

I understand your frustration and name calling. I take it all with a grain of salt and just simply explain that “stuff does happen” and we will be back online shortly.

I just want to re-iterate guys. We are not one of the typical “fly by night” company’s we have a strong management team as well as a very good financial backing. We are in it for the long haul and anyone is more than welcome to comment as they wish however everyone ALWAYS attacks a new host when they first start. We understand it takes time to work out all the bugs and build trust among the community.

I have personally ran (and still do) several very well run company’s and intend on bringing RethinkVPS to the level that it deserves.

If anyone has any further questions please feel free to post! Ill check from time to time.

We will be posting a Low End Box only special this afternoon if anyone is interested to check back then!

  15. Good evening everyone, this is Jon Beard. This post has come to my attention, and I can see that concern was raised in regards to my old company Strive Host. I want to make myself very clear that RethinkVPS and StriveHost is NOT the same company. StriveHost was shut down shortly after operations after countless problems with the datacenter, and I ended up spending more than 3 month’s budget to just get the server ready, and eventually closed the doors after the DC reported that the HDD spindle broke, and they couldn’t pull any data from my RAID configuration. I only had a small amount of clients, and completely refunded 100% of them.

RethinkVPS is ran quite differently, and we are fully staffed with a full-force team of dedicated and knowledgeable individuals to man the front-lines of the company. We are equipped with high-end services, and support that stands behind you 100% of the way. We have a different means of business here, where we believe in Quality, not Quantity.

If you have any questions, you may email me directly at my personal email: jonbeard@vzw.blackberry.net , or if you are a BlackBerry user, you may add my PIN: 31B5F09E

We will be posting a special LowEndBox promotion, Ryan will update everyone when this comes out. I felt it was necessary to clear the uncertain air.

    Have a wonderful evening everyone!

    Regards,

    Jon Beard

  16. Ok, i have had my VPS for a few days and I am overall happy with it. There has only been a few things i had to do and fix. One was to get ION Cube loaded on the server so I rebuilt the apache. THe other thing was install mod_security and get configserver Security and firewall. WHen I installed both of these my servers ram is about 28% used. Not bad at all. I have a few live sties getting traffic on it and it seems to be handling them fine.

So far I am a Thumbs up Client of them. If something changes I will let you know.

    • We are not a reseller. We manage our nodes ourselves.

We are not hosted nor affiliated with hostingxchange at all.

  18. Well, I’ll take that back. RIght now My VPS is down and has been down for about 5 hours now(pingdom Proof) I pinged my IPs and loosing between 50% and 100% of the data sent. I sent a ticket in to rethinkvps when it was up and have heard nothing. It also looks like they took down the Live chat which is also nice. This kinda service makes me cheer >.< Fail.

I wonder what the excuse for this will be?

    December 5, 2010 @ 11:10 pm | Reply
  19. Randall,

We have tried to reply to your ticket but due to the DDoS back to back we are unable to get mail to go out of the server. Please remember to check our Twitter for updates on status.

We are transferring data to a newly brought online node that is super hardened and secured against DDos attacks like these that have been plaguing us for 3 days now.

ALL current clients WILL BE ISSUED A FEW MONTH OF SERVICE for the downtime.

We will be online and stable within the next 24 hours.

Again I apologize but not much we can do when hit but a huge DDoS.

If you have questions please feel free to post here or on twitter.

Seems they were down *again* due to a supposed 2.5Gbit DDOS, according to their Twitter account. So much for that DDOS protection…

Our website has been up for some time. We are restoring client accounts today after we finish testing our new platform for DDoS protection and DOS protection. Not to many providers out there can sustain a constant 2.5gb attack.

We how however have now stepped back and realized while we launched with DDoS protection apparently it was not enough. We have now restructured out network and are testing the capacity to ensure we no longer have downtime like we had in the past few days.

We have also disabled new orders until we feel comfortable that testing has sufficed and we maintain our stability.

      Thanks for your continued interest!

  25. I do not understand what all the complaints are about I’ve been with ReThinkVPS for a month yes they had there problems but they managed to get straight back up on there feet & give all there customers a 30 day free renewal. I am totally surprised by there timing on answering tickets they were instant and the staff were completely helpful and supportive. I have had almost no issues with ReThinkVPS except the DDOS which was clearly not there fault. Personally I would recommend ReThinkVPS due to there excellent customer service, fast ticket responses & supportive staff. :)

I agree with Liam, I have been with ReThinkVPS since the start and yeah I’ve had issues but they always managed to knock there issues right out of the park, and they always give constant great deals so we can make the most of our money, as for their support it’s simply great I can’t think of anyone else to refer as i have been with a LOT of vps companies.
