LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

OVerZold - £4.55 - 5GB RAM OpenVZ VPS in Milan, Italy

Salvatore, from OVerZold, has sent in this mammoth OpenVZ plan for LowEndBox readers. I don’t think we’ve ever listed so much ram for your $7 before! Are 2GB plans now a thing of the past?

OVerZold5GB

  • 5GB RAM
  • 512MB vSwap
  • 4 CPU Cores
  • 50GB Diskspace
  • 2000GB Bandwidth
  • 1 IPv4 Address
  • 4 IPv6 Address
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • Promo: OVerZold50-30OFF
  • £4.55 /month – Order Link

OVerZold are a subsidiary of IperWeb, who are the budget brand of Prometeus. They’ve been in business since 1997 and came first in our last two Top Providers Poll. We use to think 2GB of ram was all you could get for your 7 bucks, but now the bar has been raised to 5GB! When asked, on the corresponding offer on LowEndTalk, about any limitations with this plan, Salvatore replied simply: “Don’t be a dick” (in the words of Tim from Hostigation). If you purchase one of these, do let us know what you’re using it for and how it performs :)

OVerZold only accepted payment method is Paypal. Debian 6 (32/64 bit), ubuntu 10.04/11.10/12.04 (32/64 bit), centos 5/6 (32/64 bit), HostInABox Kloxo Centos 32 bit, TurnKeyLinux and more operating systems are available. Servers are unmanaged and will be provisioned once payment has been received. TUN/TAP/PPP/FUSE are all supported. For more information, have a read of their Terms of Service.

Network Information:

Servers are located in Milan, Italy colocated in the largest campus/internet exchange of Italy. Prometeus is LIR (RIPE NCC member) and do BGP with our Autonomous System Number (AS34971), total bandwidth capacity is 10Gbps.

    – – <- That close to ordering one but I don't really want to support a movement where a VPS company is happy to say "What you get is what you get" and no longer have any real standards to withhold. I like to know that I am ordering a semi-decent product, even at LEB pricing.

    March 17, 2013 @ 12:05 pm | Reply
  11. Maounique:

I can assure you it will be at least semi-decent.
We dont oversell on plans on the other sites, but it turned out to be a waste of resources.
This is a test to see how far overselling can go without causing major problems.
We expect CPU spikes, for instance, we will throttle heavy CPU users that go often or long enough over their allotted load (for example 10 load with 4 cores), nothing that other people dont do to manage this kind of server. It is not like we tie you in for a year, it is a test and some fun :)
It may be that not all ram is available all the time, I suspect you dont plan to run your business on such a plan ?
We have all kinds of plans, including a Biz line, this is for hobbists and personal projects, as well as testing.
We frankly dont know how it will go, can only say we will do our best to make it work well.
Nobody wants bad reviews, even for such a thing :)

    • Lichter:

I see your point but I just don’t think increasing RAM at LEB pricing while sacrificing service and quality is something I would buy for a real server. I might pick one up to test some heavy RAM programs on :). Be ready…

      March 17, 2013 @ 12:44 pm | Reply
      • Maounique:

Well, this is what they are made for :) It is a real server, just with non-guaranteed resources. In practice might work just as well as our other products.
Almost everyone does this, OVZ is made for overcommit, practice shows it is working well for years.

        March 17, 2013 @ 12:59 pm | Reply
        • Spirit:

Non-guaranteed resources? Huh? So you can’t guarantee that customer will get this what you advertise? Sorry but even for overselling this sound strange unless you picked wrong word.

          March 17, 2013 @ 3:01 pm | Reply
      • Not only that, it makes it so much harder for providers who are trying their best to create something decent when people just go in at silly prices, this industry is getting worse every day.

        March 17, 2013 @ 2:28 pm | Reply
        • Maounique:

I am not sure how to take this, if anything, we try to prove overselling can work if done right even at crazy prices and RAM levels.
If we can make a buck from this, imagine how much others are doing…
But, dont want to jinx it, we are not there yet, it may well be a failure and we will end up losing money on this.
We do not intend to give garbage service, nothing will suffer in theory, will just use better the resources. From 30-50% to 70-100% resource utilization, this is increased efficiency, lower carbon footprint, better price, I dont see any bad point here, but we will see if the theory holds water or not.

          March 17, 2013 @ 3:00 pm | Reply
    • So you’re basically saying this is a plan to attract guinea pigs to test how high you can go on RAM before the service goes completely kaput?

      March 17, 2013 @ 12:59 pm | Reply
      • Maounique:

Not at all. We will never go near kaput, if it starts to suffer (often spikes over 24-the number of cores), then we will stop adding new ppl, will just take stock off and see if it settles. If we reach the conclusion it can be good and customers are happy, we will put more servers, this is the test I was thinking about.

        March 17, 2013 @ 1:15 pm | Reply
  12. All the other openvz services we sell are delivered on servers which usually use 30 to 50 percent of resources. They are piced to make a profit this way, so it’s fine. OVerZold plans are intended to be delivered on nodes using 70-100 percent of resources most of the time. We have a long track of decent services and don’t plan to do bad with this, it just will be what’s advertised a service with a high ratio of overcommit.

    Hello !

    1. Minecraft is allowed, but this is not SSD nor SSD cached. However, there are 8 sas2 drives which should be enough regarding the IOPS.
    2. IRC is allowed, however, DDoS is not, we blackhole 24 hours at first and suspend at second incoming attack, while outgoing attacks mean termination directly.
    3. Swapping ? Absolutely NOT ! When RAM is so cheap these days, not only that there will be no disk swap, but also something left for disk caching.
    4. Some orders are marked as fraud, we manually investigate those if there is a ticket about it. Most of them pass manual verification, but there are exceptions.

Prometeus, tho, is having a LOT of big business (millions a year) from major projects, mostly streaming, but even banking and securities sector for which provides services. The VPS part is more like a fun project for someone which loves this business. Say, some kind of hobby and these plans are no different. A very serious joke by Salvatore :)

    • The point of test IP and file is to verify if our network – in general – can fit your need from the external (remember that the IP traffic can be – and often is – asimmetric). It would be difficult to list test ip for different services / server.
But for this very plan I did an exception and put a test ip on the same network where these plans will be setup :-)

I think you can figure that out yourself, beacause it’s cheap. However, I was just going to use the server for a private minecraft server and a website.

“Since you dont pay for it anyway”
Well, I was going to pay, until you marked it as a fraud.

        “Why come to us?”
Because you where cheap and i did’nt want to spend too much money on this.

“Dont try to make any more accounts in any other name, I will close them all, no matter the threats and insults.”

I know exactly what account you mean, Me and my friend where going to share this server, I placed a order and you fraud marked it, so my friend tried to buy a server instead, then you closed hes account for no reason.

The IPs that connected should be:
83.253.230.xx (My IP, phille58@dolanpls.org was the account)
and my firends IP, not sure what hes is.

And yes, i know that my friend threatened you and so on, but I can still understand that since you canceld his account for no real reason.

The other female account you are talking about, was my account. It’s registrerd in my mothers name since i am under 18, all the details where correct on it and you canceled it for no reason.

” BTW, you are Philip now after you “proved” with your card that you are Elias ?”

That is valid for everything else, once your load goes high and you use more resources than your fair share, we throttle the CPU.

        • marius:

i understand now, that mean if i use 100% all 4 cpus vps will be throttled. If i use 25% of 4 cpus what about this? Im looking to host a gameserver it never makes more load than 2 or3 %

          March 18, 2013 @ 8:19 pm | Reply
    • Maounique:

Not really, this offer is very far from the Biz line, actually is the opposite, the budget side :)
You can run gameservers and IRC on this plan, only limitation is the fact it is not DDoS protected, if it happens, first time we nullroute, second we suspend.

        • Of course not, but since ddos affect all your neighbors and we don’t offer any ddos protection service we have little choice…

“that mean if i use 100% all 4 cpus vps will be throttled”
No, you are allowed to use 100% your CPU, if you use more than that and the load goes over 4 regularly, only then we have a problem.
100% load means 4 in this case, since you have 4 cores. Stay below 4 and everything is fine :)

    • Maounique:

Yes, it is partially true, but there are many limitations and it is easy to find out your real IP.
Only real solution is to get a DDoS protected service as you did.

We do have DNS, but only for shared hosting, you can use a third party one: http://board.prometeus.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13&sid=15040a61caf7e682d3e252dda3eaaf08
You can also use your registrar most of the time, but a third party DNS offers a lot of options.

Sorry, I forgot about the upgrades part.
It is easy to order more IPs, just ask before if there are any free on your node, also disk space can be added easily, but we do not have an add-on for that, you will need to open a ticket and we will see if there is some available.

About your DDoS stuff, I once got attacked, according to your info this was a 400k pps attack, that shouldn’t be more than 500mbps. I received one attack and never again the server has been attacked. I understand you don’t want to host customers that are regularly under an attack, but you really scare those customers who receive ab attack once or twice a year.

The problem is that the network has some very lucrative and pricey deals and it is paramount to be always up and at capacity.
We do not offer DDoS protection of any kind so we want to make sure everyone understands the policy before signing up. Prometeus does not survive from LEBs, it is a side project that can run as long as it does not hinder the main business.

As a general note, you do not need to forward any port as we do not do NAT or firewall anything. If it cannot bind, maybe you already run something on that port, try another.

Prometeus doesnt live from VPS and we can afford it.
      However, this is wrong…
We do not intend to kill off anyone from the market, the more choice the better for the customer, we will not deploy grand scale these nodes, only want to see if it can work and we see it as a challenge to raise the bar.
This is the only promo we will do, after it is over, the 4 GB will be a bit over 7 $, so I hope the other providers will give us some break :(

  54. Maounique:

If you manage to get in, we wont change the conditions as long as you keep the VPS.
It is not one-off in the sense that the payment will increase for teh customers, only that we may discontinue it if found to be unsustainable, meaning no more servers will be deployed and no more stock (apart from filling the gaps left by customers that no longer need it) will be released.

        The answer is…
As much as we need. The servers can take 512 GB, but CPU and IO will run out before that.
So we will see how much can the CPU and the storage carry on in good conditions, and then we will add more ram to match that.

It already did at midnight CET.
Taking many new customers in one go has some risks, not only technical, mostly regarding abuse.
We make offers periodically to keep it manageable, there is still the 4G one for 5 Pounds, even tho it doesnt fit LEB pricing (might do something about that later on).
Otherwise, we still have the 40% off for SSD offers, 1 GB non-oversold with SSD is still a good offer and there are few people that really need more ram.

One thing to note, the HW specifications will vary, but the cpu and ram will remain fixed, only vendor and storage will be different.
For further information about the specific node which is filling in the moment of the order, please open a ticket. We cannot foresee how the sales will go and how many will be needed, we have many servers but not all the same.
