VPSCheap - $1.50 128MB OpenVZ VPS in Scranton or Phoenix

VPSCheap Yet another dirt cheap VPS offer from a new provider today. Erez from VPSCheap.info sent me some info about their cheap VPS plans, which starts at $1.50/month for their “Lite” plan. Alternatively you can pay $15/year, or $25/year for two. Here is the spec:

  • 128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 200GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

It’s on old’ish Xeon X3220 boxes. Only payment method is PayPal. Two locations to choose from — Scranton PA with BurstNET, or Phoenix AZ with Secured Server. Erez also ran CheapDomainNamesDot.com which was featured here in July, but VPSCheap.info has much better website :) Domain registered in early July 2011, although Erez would have other Internet/hosting-related business for longer. Google “erezrb” for more info.

There are a few other low end plans at VPSCheap.info. For example “Maximum” which has 1024MB/2048MB memory, 40GB storage and 300GB/month data transfer for $5.90/month.

I think LEA should add one more criteria which is the connection speed guarantee.

My password I used for the signup didn’t work for the VPS panel. I put in forgot password, no emails ever reach me. Tried this 3 times. Opened a ticket and an hour later someone mispelled my name and said to login to the vps and use passwd… Well the point I wanted to go on the control panel is because the VPS wasn’t even correctly made, I cannot connect to it via SSH.

Also there was no choice in the OS of the VPS when I ordered, I assume I can just goto the panel and have it reinstalled with debian though.

Its been 5 hours now, still waiting on a solution where my panel password is reset and the VPS is correctly made…

So far you get what you paid for, $1.50.

      Dear Brian,

the problem was that when you order the vps you setup a password that start with %
solusvm did not accept this kind of password.

about “no choice in the OS of the VPS when I order” – yes you will need to login to solusvm control panel in order to do that.

What PC? You know what a VPS is? Maybe you should learn to use Linux first on a local PC then making a loophole for every script-kiddie that is out there. Just a thought.

          September 8, 2011 @ 10:30 pm | Reply
        • Best bet would be asking VPScheap what they want in there. Those fields are really for shared hosting and shouldn’t be there on the form but it’s really up to the provider as to what they want to do.

But yes, if you don’t know what those fields are for, maybe a VPS is a bit out of your league.

If you have a Windows 7 pc and you set up your box as Ubuntu with a Desktop then it’s pretty easy. I don’t know VPScheap but I assume that it’s an option for your operating system. Go in through the control panel route that was described in the original email and re-install the operating system if it is. If it’s not an option then you will have to google instructions for how to set up a desktop on the server type you have. I would go for Ubuntu if I were you. Once you’ve done that then follow these instructions from your PC. http://www.liberiangeek.net/2011/06/connect-to-ubuntu-11-04-from-windows-via-remote-desktop/

You have got to put a bit of effort in yourself but that’s part of the fun. Enjoy. Johnny

What is the difference? The answer is none..

      September 11, 2011 @ 11:48 am | Reply
      • Actually there’s quite a lot of difference now a days. Not necessarily with the difference between *.info’s and *.com/*.net’s but Google is being selective with the country based *.tld’s now and only giving them full weight within those countries and languages while downgrading them elsewhere.

I have a youtube downloader on a *.be domain what does great with Belgium visitors but poorly elsewhere.

As to why, it probably was the only one available with that name.

        September 11, 2011 @ 2:49 pm | Reply
      • Big difference. Rather than calling themselves “VPSCheap”, they have to call themselves “VPSCheap.info” instead. When people hear about a brand name the tendency is to put a .com behind it…

we detected that one vps takes lots of cpu resources and disk i/o
that was way the slow performance issue
this vps are terminated and refund,

now all vps are working normal.

      September 19, 2011 @ 7:29 am | Reply
      • So is this the second user you’ve terminated? You did so on the 14th up there.

If they’re using large amount of bandwidth, maybe offering such a package with 200gigs of monthly traffic wasn’t such a good idea. My math shows that that would work out to be 6 gigs a day per client. Multiply that by the number of users on the box and…

I have to admit that I’m also concerned about these two users being terminated without warning. If you’re overselling, which appears that you are, they could have been using what was allocated to them per your offer and were getting towards the upper limit. Much like how shared hosts handle client on “unlimited” plans who actually start using a decent amount of resources.

        • VPSCHEAP.info:

          Dear drmike,

the last terminated vps get a warning and ignore it, then i suspended his vps, he contact us and asked to unsuspend his vps, we reactivate the vps with a warning no to continue to used high cpu and disk i/o, his ignore that massage again, so the vps was terminated.

Had that ‘Power outage’, TUN and PPP gone, took ages to get that enabled. Again clearly stating please not to forget ppp_mppe/mppe module.

Finally got a reply yesterday afternoon. (31 mins) after I had received it. Never guess what. That damn mppe. Responded within 45 mins. yesterday. Still no reply.

    • For what it’s worth, if it’s a billing issue they’re having with burst it’s quite possible one is coming for Phoenix. If they used securedservers or whatever it’s called, it’s the same people blazeVPS did after getting kicked out of hostdime for chargebacks.

It’s quite possible SS is a lot more easy going about late bills.

Obviously I wouldn’t put anything critical on a 1.5$ VPS, but this one is good for nothing, always down when I need it. Stay away people. Btw. Let me add my voice to the list of those whose account has been lost. http://vpscheap.info isn’t even loading. I haven’t been able to log into the VPS web console for a couple of weeks, even after opening two tickets. I have been receiving late payment notifications, despite paying well before the due date. Now, VPS itself is unreachable by any means. I think that it’s a safe bet that this company was a scam. So, I lost about $2.90. That’s not bad. However, I did upload some content on there that I hadn’t backed up. That was my own fault, but it still hurts a bit.

I still have another VPS, but recently opened up an account with Amazon. After the first year, it will cost more ( I’m figuring about $7/month at the current usage), but it will be worth it to know that it’s a legitimate company with superb uptime. The uptime on these has been horrible, and there is very little customer service. Even then, it can be pulling teeth to get basic things to work, like tunneling, or even loop devices. These are fun toys, but it’s not worth the work when you don’t even know if you’ll be able to access your account from week to week.

For what it’s worth, the IRC client there dropped out of chat from ping timeout at 7am on October 16. It hasn’t been active since, or at least not enough to finish booting (I set up a script to send mail on boot). I’d go to their website to complain, but it looks like that’s not an option any longer.
