Here is a new offer for the new year from ReThinkVPS, from an email from Sam. According to Sam, they will be ReThink’ing the strategy for 2012, doing things a little bit differently and trying to penetrate the low end VPS market. Well, best of luck. The promo here is not much different from what they have offered 2 months ago though. Use the coupon code 2012 to get 17% off of the same package. So “VPS 1.0″ comes down to $6.60/month after the discount. Signup link.

128MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory

30GB storage

1Gbps unmetered bandwidth

OpenVZ/SolusVM

There’s a bit more info on the same offer posted on WHT. Nodes are located in either Los Angeles CA or Scranton PA. Servers themselves are connected to 1Gbps ports, although what you might eventually receive depends on a lot of other factors. From section 9 of their Terms of Services, they would contact abusers if a VPS is slowing down others. They have been around for more than a year now.

If P2P, IRC and public proxies are forbidden according to ToS, what other applications would you use such VPS for (1Gbps unmetered but only 128MB guaranteed memory)?

Erik from FastVPS emailed me their “Boxing Week” promotion, which was also posted on WHT — with lots of replies there already which might be a good sign. By the way, Boxing Week “is a period of six days or more that starts with Boxing Day and ends with New Year’s Eve” so I might be a bit late posting their offer — we’ll see. It’s a 50% off recurring discount when you use promo code boxingweek. It applies to all their OpenVZ VPS plans except for the “FAST $12/YR”. So these are their low-end plans:

FAST $12/YR

128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory

15GB storage

1TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps (upgraded from 500GB/month)

$12/Year — Direct signup link

FAST256MB

256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory

30GB storage

2TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps (upgraded from 1TB/month)

$1.50/month — Direct signup link after discount

FAST512MB

512MB guaranteed/1GB burstable memory

60GB storage

4TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps (upgraded from 2TB/month)

$2.50/month — Direct signup link after discount

FAST1024MB

1GB guaranteed/2GB burstable memory

110GB storage

6TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps (upgraded from 3TB/month)

$6/month — Direct signup link after discount

Payment in either PayPal or AlertPay. Yes I know on the WHT post it says “cut by 50% our price on Semi-Annually and Annually Billing cycle”, however tried on monthly billing and the coupon code still works. Servers in Scranton PA which I presume would be with VolumeDrive (test IP: 199.168.142.37). Personally I think $2.50 for 512MB/1024MB would probably be the best value here. There is no need to commit for the whole year, (almost) everyone can afford to lose $2.50, and 512MB is plenty for many applications. They are using Xeon X3450′s with 16GB memory and 2TB SATA. IRC, Gameservers and Shoutcast are allowed, according to Erik.

Domain itself was registered by “Nicholas Eouani” in Florida in October 2011 which makes it merely 2 months old. However the registrant email address led me to a different person — “Emeric Olenga” of Montreal Canada, who was on WHT previously running a hosting company which he dumped 4 years ago. Anyway, I would still treat this as a new company and the plan is “too good to be true” at the moment. Some brave hearts would definitely give it a try, and we’ll see how things stabilise over the next couple of months.

They take both PayPal and AlertPay. Sam told me that recently they have moved to a new datacenter which enables them to provide full 1Gb/sec unmetered bandwidth, whereas their previous offer only gives 400GB/month before throttled to 20Mbps. And from their last WHT offer, they seem to be at Los Angeles and Scranton, again! Didn’t they just move to Ubiquity Servers in Atlanta/Phoenix a few months ago, from LA and Scranton? The price also went up a bit, but you do get more storage space.

WHOIS is still masked, and they still have both NS on the same server. IRC, torrent and anonymous proxies are forbidden in the ToS.

Updated December 2011 — Well, Ken has switched to a different domain (UptimeVPS.co) and it is now not resolvable. Looks like the deals are too good to be true here.

Ken from UptimeVPS pointed me to their October offer on WHT. For €3/month (~USD$4.02), you can get the following VPS:

1024MB memory/1024MB vswap

80GB storage

800GB/month data transfer

OpenVZ/SolusVM

Sign up page. Payment in PayPal, Google Checkout, Moneybookers and AlertPay. On the WHT offer page it states that the service is available in either France with OVH (test IP: 87.98.184.76) or Germany with Hetzner (test IP: 176.9.37.252). However on the sign up page, Scranton in US is also an option. ~USD$4/month for a 1024MB OpenVZ node — that’s indeed quite cheap.

What interested me more, however, is their current special offers. €5/year (~USD$6.70) for a 128MB OpenVZ VPS?! By the time you click through the ordering link it actually shows up as €10/year (~USD$13.40) for 128MB memory, 128MB vswap, 10GB storage and 100GB/month data — which although is still cheap, it’s just comparable with yearly offers from other providers. 96MB got their reviews here, and from their previous offer here, people are sceptical but quite a few people are happy with the performance and service.

We’ll see how things turn out.

10GB storage

200GB/month data transfer

OpenVZ/SolusVM

It’s on old’ish Xeon X3220 boxes. Only payment method is PayPal. Two locations to choose from — Scranton PA with BurstNET, or Phoenix AZ with Secured Server. Erez also ran CheapDomainNamesDot.com which was featured here in July, but VPSCheap.info has much better website :) Domain registered in early July 2011, although Erez would have other Internet/hosting-related business for longer. Google “erezrb” for more info.

There are a few other low end plans at VPSCheap.info. For example “Maximum” which has 1024MB/2048MB memory, 40GB storage and 300GB/month data transfer for $5.90/month.

Justin from YourVZ emailed me yesterday about their low end offers. Their offer can also be found on WHT. 5 of their Silver plans are under $7/month. Comparing to their Gold and Platinum plans, their Silver plans are more CPU-capped, and have relatively small amount of monthly data quota. It starts from $15/year for “Silver 128″.

128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory

10GB storage

200GB/month data transfer on 1Gbps

OpenVZ/SolusVM

It scales all the way up to “Silver 768″ which is $6/month with 768MB/1536MB memory, 30GB storage and 800GB/month data. YourVZ only accepts PayPal. Servers with HostNOC/BurstNET in Scranton PA (test IP: 184.22.204.211). Check their ToS and AUP to make sure you agree with the terms there. For example, under AUP, Disk Space — “YourVZ.com Customers may not initiate the following… Use 90% or more of alloted system CPU resources for longer then 180 seconds or <del>2% of the servers CPU resources for longer than 5 minutes</del>“ (Updated: Fixed by Justin). Sounds pretty, hmm, restrictive?

I do like the short quip next to the Linux distro though. For example: “CentOS — ENTerprise OS”. “Scientific Linux — Basically Enterprise Linux” (okay, both of them are built using open sourced RH Enterprise Linux). But ZFS? That can’t be in used on their nodes, can it?

YourVZ.com is registered by Justin from Johannesburg, South Africa merely a month ago so we are still uncertain whether the service would be able to carry out for the entire year. Silver 384/512/768 do have monthly payment though.

Direct sign up link here. PayPal only at the moment, and somehow it does not add the 20% VAT at checkout. It also requires you to read through 15 pages of ToS hosted at Scribd without any easy way doing keyword search. They are a UK registered limited company though (company number 07715839 since July 2011), despite being on an .ORG domain. 123COM has been providing hosting since 2007 according to this WHT post. Domain however has only been registered since May this year.

Servers are in either Scranton PA or Manchester UK (probably BurstNET in both cases), which you can select on the ordering page. They are also having France and Germany locations coming up according to their Data Centre page. Do note that “West Coast, US” should actually be East Coast. Now I wonder how they can actually provide 100Mbps unmetered in those locations at this price.

Updated December 2011 — Daniel has sold the VPS hosting business in September but the website has gone offline since 24 November 2011, as the new owner hasn’t been paying the bill.

Daniel from ZazoomVPS has sent me some pretty nice offers for the LowEndBox readers. Two choices and one price — $7/month. It gets you either a KVM plan (KVM sign up link) or an OpenVZ plan (OpenVZ sign up link). Very similar spec:

1GB memory/1GB swap for KVM and 2GB burstable memory for OpenVZ

30GB storage

1.5TB/month data transfer

KVM/OpenVZ + SolusVM

Servers with VolumeDrive in Scranton PA. I guess most people here would be able to tell the difference between KVM and OpenVZ. One for full hardware virtualization and alternative OS install. Another one for better performance and simplified installation, management and upgrade/downgrades.

Too cheap for my liking, nor is Scranton my preferred location but some of you guys are going to take up the offer anyway. Daniel has been quite an active participant here on this blog, although haven’t seen him much on LowEndTalk.

Similar offer as last time, but in Scranton PA rather than Los Angeles CA. It’s $19.95/year with the following spec:

256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory

35GB storage

500GB/month data transfer

OpenVZ/SolusVM

Direct sign up link here. They also have an offer of $4.95/month for 512MB/1024MB memory, 40GB storage and 700GB/month data transfer, if you don’t want to pay annually. They are almost a year old now, as their domain was registered in August 2010. However there seems to be a transfer of domain ownership from Colin to Keith in Sydney, Australia. Sold? They also had a few issues with their website earlier this month. Some VPS were reported off-line, and I wonder whether everything has resolved.

Its About page claims to be US/UK based. However when I first saw the website, it looks exactly the same as Canada-based VPSRocket who went into dead pool in April. So I replied John asking whether there’s any association, and I got the response saying that they simply bought the design. Ahem. At the same time “Volt-Host.com” is still registered to Mark P of failed VPSRocket, and MisterTickle who posted the WHT offer for Volt-VPS has Volt-Host listed under his contact information.

Domain was registered in April 2011 with WHOIS privacy protection. They are using CloudFlare for DNS but their website does not seem to be sitting behind it. WHMCS is licensed to a completely different person, which with a bit of googling shows he’s also Canada-based. So maybe they have purchased not just the design but the whole business? I’ll label it with Buyers Beware for this one, and would wait a few months to see whether it would follow the same fake as VPSRocket.
