Via this WHT offer. BuildYourVPS, part of TOCICI, have been offering custom-build VPS since January this year at least (last time they featured on this blog). Quite a few changes since then. Besides a different website, now all VPS also gets 1TB/month data by default. No longer is 16MB memory an option (too much support overhead I guess). And for now the most basic VPS starts at $2/month which comes with

Shared IP address
OpenVZ

Servers in Portland OR, and it has HE traffic and native IPv6 support. Shared IPv4 could be an issue depending on the application you are trying to run. They will put a Nginx in front to proxy to your server. I have not seen the control panel so no idea whether the Nginx proxy configuration is automated. If you want a dedicated IPv4 address it would be $1/month extra. My guess is that IPv6 addresses are free.

You can choose either Portland OR or Denver CO for server locations. The domain has been registered since Nov 2008 but they have only been in business since November 2009. There’s WHOIS protection on the domain although it is not difficult to figure out who is running it (the same guy behind post-2009 StarkVPS, KodoHost and others). There is also this thread on HostLoc (with my rusty Chinese I think the reviews aren’t too positive).

Via this WHT offer. We have previously covered TOCICI‘s VPS product. It looks like they have completely revamped their virtual server page, and is now hosting on its own site — BuildYourVPS.com. The model has also changed. Instead of listing out plans, it let you mix ‘n’ match options such as bandwidth, RAM, disk and type of IP connection to come out a final price. So if you choose the cheapest options…

And it would come out to only $0.75/month! The servers are in Portland OR, and it uses OpenVZ (no control panel AFAIK).

What you can use it for is another interesting question. 16MB burstable might mean you can’t even system level utilities such as apt-get to install/update software. You can probably burn through 1GB of data transfer from just the “noise” on the line. 500MB of disk space is barely enough for the base OS install. Glorified shell account with root access? You don’t even own a public IP.

Via this WHT offer. When I first saw RockMyWeb‘s offer, I was thinking “hey it’s weird”. You need to pay yearly fee for a membership so (1) you can see the pricing (2) can order VPS. However with the WHT offer, you can get free recurring membership (code FREEMEMBER) and it tells you the pricing in the post. For $6.50/month you can get:

Although the specs are good, do note that Web-Wide-Hosting uses OpenVZ flag cpulimit to restrict your CPU usage to make your scripts run artificially slow. It will be fine if you are running IO bound applications but it can be frustrating running your dynamic sites on it. Maybe that will add a new layer of challenge — try running a WordPress blog on a 100MHz Pentium 4!
