Paul from Webangel.ie emailed me about the latest package that they have on their website. Now for 4 Euro/month (USD$4.84 damn Euros are cheap these days), you get

128MB memory
5GB storage
100GB monthly data transfer
Xen/DTC

Servers are in Germany. Interestingly it is now using Domain Technologie Control from GPLHost as the control panel for Xen. I’ve used GPLHost once and the control panel was not bad (a long time ago though), but best of all that it is GPL’ed from the beginning. Therefore if you do not find comfortable that your hosting provider is using proprietary software, it’s something that you can give a try.

The distro selection is a bit lacking though — Debian, CentOS or NetBSD.

Paul from Webangel.ie wrote to me again regarding to their plan changes. Their “micro” Xen VPS package is now half-priced, dropped to €9/6 months (USD$1.90/month). The spec has also been slightly altered, and now you get

2GB storage
50GB/month data transfer
Xen

Servers are in Germany. It is now one of the cheapest VPS package around — probably the cheapest Xen provider around?! I noted that under the list of Linux distributions available, NetBSD was listed. Although it probably shouldn’t qualify as a Linux distro, but now we have a very low cost xBSD provider.

Updated February 2011: It seems Elite Data Hosting has also bite the dust this month. Website has been resolved to parked domain since 15 Feb. FAIL.

It’s great to be able to run xBSD on the cheap here, and there’s even a choice of running OpenSolaris but not at the cheapest plan. It’s also very cheap for a 10mbps unmetered pipe (if you are into that kind of thingy). Domain was registered back in February this year (i.e. new business). Servers are located in Los Angeles CA.

Interesting setup I’ll say. From owner’s LinkedIn profile he seems to be pretty technical so hopefully it goes well.

Prgmr.com – $5 64MB Xen VPS + Free First Month

Prgmr.com has been around offering Linux and NetBSD Xen VPS for a while but last time I checked they had temporarily suspended new sign ups. Good news is — they are back! You can now sign up to their Xen VPS offerings, including their low-end $5/month VPS in Herakles DC in Sacramento.

Currently they are offering a time limited special — first month is free, because “prgmr.com is still something of a mess”.

Update: Prgmr.com is now offering 5GB instead of 10GB of storage because of mirroring. Doing RAID 1 is a Good Thing^TM — you get 2x the read speed, but most importantly, a failed drive does not take hours (or days!) of downtime.
