Ken from Virpus emailed me about VirtuPulse, a new VPS brand with more customisable options that let you build your own VPS. The plan starts from $5/month with the following spec

512MB guaranteed/2048MB burstable memory

30GB storage

5Mbps unmetered bandwidth, or 1000GB/month data on 100Mbps port

2 IP addresses

Servers are in Kansas City, and I guess backed by the same support staffs as Virpus (which has mixed reviews when you search around). I have used Virpus earlier this year for about 2 months to test out several things. It was a relative old box (last generation Opterons), but the stability was not bad.

SimpleRack has been providing various services from shared hosting to colo. Their website tracerouted to Joe’s Datacenter in Kansas City so I assume that’s where are all the other services are located (including the VPS). Domain was registered for a bit more than a year. There is no indication that SimpleRack is not a one man show, and from the owner’s Facebook page he might have some other priorities. It does have an SLA though, probably covered by the DC.

10GB storage

5Mbps unmetered bandwidth

OpenVZ/SolusVM

The servers are located in Kansas City. Exactly the same package as AngiHost as well (and AngiHost is 55 cents/month cheaper), so I assume that it is also in the Oak Tower. Who would be hosting these servers? I have no idea but my guess would be with Joe’s or Wholesale Internet? As the plans are exactly the same, these might be reseller accounts — but who are they reselling?

Ostach itself has only had its domain registered since February this year, with WHOIS protected registrant info (argh!) From the website they also seem to resell BurstNet’s in Scranton, and someone else’s in Orlando (probably DimeNOC).

I suspect that the VPS is with the later, as 5Mbps reminds me Virpus’ VPS packages, which are also in Kansas City in Oak Tower facility.

While the domain has been registered since March 2009, the service might only been around for less than a month if this tweet is of any indication.

Similar to their popular $7/month OpenVZ VPS offer, but with Free DirectAdmin license even if you pay by monthly. Yup, similar to their current offer on WHT but you don’t need to prepay 6 months in order to get the free license. Use coupon code LEB-FREEDA when you sign up. Offer expires on 18 Feb 2010.

512MB guaranteed/2048MB burstable memory

25GB storage

5Mbps bandwidth

2 IP addresses

OpenVZ/VSXPathway

Servers are in Kansas City. I’ve actually got one from them for around a month now, and

Server/network has been responsive. Although I’ve not put any load on it.

Equal share (i.e. not cpulimited) of 4x AMD Opteron 270. Old CPU but works well.

Personally I don’t really use control panels but I guess it would be something useful if you are not comfortable on the command line, or to use it to host sites for family and friends & give them the panel access.

You get

512MB guaranteed/2048MB burstable memory

25GB storage (that’s the only thing different from U-VM-512)

5Mbps unmetered bandwidth

OpenVZ/VSXPathway

Servers are in Kansas City colo with MidColo.com, according to this about page. 2GB burstable memory + 5Mbps bandwidth sounds massively oversold — but consider it’s just $7/month I don’t think anyone would complain. You do have to order via this link. 1st month fully managed (panel installation + setting up everything I guess), and you can get DirectAdmin for free if you pay 6 month in advance.

Sounds like a good cheap VPS from a provider that has been around for a while.

Update Dec 2009: ByteVPS has been down since 2009-12-10. Codev.co.nz is showing directory index, and MercuryWeb.net with a simple text message saying that they are not taking new customers at the moment. Another dead provider.

Via this WHT offer. ByteVPS has some pretty minimalistic web design, accompanying its minimalistic virtual server offerings. One one plan available on their website — “Byte” sized VPS for $4/month. Except when you click through the order page and it comes up as $5/month. Blame the ever-falling USD I guess :) Anyway, you’ll get:

96MB guaranteed/128MB burstable memory

5GB storage

75GB/month data transfer

OpenVZ/SolusVM

The SolusVM IP address (60.234.45.xxx) points to a New Zealand ISP so <del>I guess the VMs could be in NZ. That would certainly make it a very good offer consider majority of the low end boxes are in US or Europe</del> <ins>The VPS servers are actually in Kansa City MO</ins>. Then I tried to do some background check on the business…

The OP of the deal on WHT, “MercuryWeb”, seems to be familiar. Indeed it has already been covered here back in June this year on their $4.90 128MB Xen VPS. It appears MercuryWeb’s address no longer shows their website (currently just a standard cPanel page for me). Well. It appears to be not the only business from Dan that has gone nowhere. My records also show that Codev Technology that we covered in November last year, which stopped taking new business back in April this year, and the website is currently offline — was also started by the same person.

Good on ya for being a serial hosting entrepreneur. All I did was playing Quake World when I was 19-20 at uni. Although buyers beware, as usual…

400GB/month data transfer

Servers are in either Kansas City with WholeSaleInternet, or Scranton PA with (my guess) BurstNET. It’s nice that with multiple VM management panels coming out to compete with open sourced HyperVM, it is driving down the per-server license cost. SolusVM at $10/node and VePortal at $7.50/node, and with a 16GB node it is not hard running 30-40 VMs inside. Good to see that providers acknowledging there still exists a market for budget low end virtual servers — as long as the customers know what they are getting.

So far I can see 5 servers hosting VPS users, and when you drill down to the “Details” page, you’ll see them as 4GB RAM dual core machines (i.e. very lowend in today’s VPS physical node standard). I guess that also means they do not need to put in too many clients on a box.

It’s also on this WHT offer page.

80MB guaranteed / 192MB burstable memory

25GB storage

200GB/month data transfer

OpenVZ + In-House Control Panel (RAM CP)

Arch, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Slackware, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu

It’s nice to see that they have a demo of their in-house built control panel (and explicitly stated that they are not using HyperVM). RAMCP is very functional (start/stop/restart VM, reload OS, download backups, basic stats) although not pretty (who cares at $5.99/month!) The servers are in Kanas City MO with Level 3, Cogent, AFS and KCIX connectivity. Their website is powered by RAM-CMS written by the owner — yes a developer-run provider which is always a good sign.

Saw this low end OpenVZ VPS that fits right inside our budget. BuzzServers has a $7/month VPS package “Linux VPS I” that has:

64MB guaranteed/128MB burstable memory

5GB storage

80GB/month data transfer

HyperVM

One down side I see is that CentOS 5 is the only choice of Linux distro, which I think might not be that a good idea for low-memory VPSs due to
yum
uses significantly more memory than
apt-get
. According to their About page, the servers are in either Kansas City MO or Dallas TX. The WHOIS record certainly shows that it might be a very new company.
