Igor from VDS6 emailed me an interesting offer today. It’s FreeBSD — it uses BSD jail rather than hardware virtualization to get FreeBSD 8.2 running on amd64 platform. It’s also IPv6 only, although the website itself does exist on IPv4 so you can still browse and make purchase on the v4 network. Their low end offer “v128″ is $1.95/month and it has

The fact that it’s FreeBSD + IPv6-only would ensure it stays as a niche product. IPv4 wasn’t even an available purchase option when you sign up.

Here are some info on Hybrid drives, although I am not sure how much performance can be gained on a server hosting virtualized environment. Lots of payment methods are supported — QG (credit cards), PayPal, LinkPoint (credit cards), AlertPay, CashX.com, OKPAY, etc. Servers in AIS Data Center in San Diego CA — see their datacenter page for details and speed test page for test download files. According to Mike, AmeriNOC has been around for more than 10 years. CheapVPS is now run by Simply Virtual Servers Ltd, a UK based company, and they seem to run other A2B2′s previous brands such as FsckVPS. Also note that the price excludes VAT, so add 20% if you are in EU and can’t be exempted.

As it’s Xen HVM which means you can install FreeBSD, NetBSD or OpenSolaris on it. Windows installations do require your own license though. Servers in UK with RapidSwitch (test IP: 95.154.246.177). Well, that’s just about 1 pound cheaper than 2 years ago when they were first listed here.

One of the biggest feature in SolusVM 1.3+ is the Linux-KVM support, and I am sort of expecting to see more and more providers diving into the it and bringing in cheap KVM-based virtual servers. Tim from Hostigation informed me their new KVM offer earlier today, and it starts at $6/month with the following spec:

Here is the link to order. FreeBSD 8.2 is also available to be deployed. Servers in Rock Hill SC, and Tim has also sent in some pretty good benchmark results. A bit more expensive than their previous OpenVZ offer, but cheaper than their current Xen plans. You get a full virtualized VM rather than just a container. Hostigation has been around for >5 years, had a good review in a comment posted here and on WHT. They are (were?) also offering 30-day moneyback guarantee although I am not sure whether it is still applying to KVM packages.

Regarding to the monthly data transfer, Justin mentioned that they are actually quite soft over the overage, and typically would not charge customer unless into the TB range. They accept credit card only via Google Checkout and no PayPal. Servers are with Latisys in Ashburn VA, although Justin also mentioned that they have nodes in Los Angeles.

While Encept.com itself was pretty new (registered in Jan 2011), it is part of Zeruck LLC and Justin has been providing service at Oss.im for 4+ years. They took pride in themselves on FreeBSD, and offer FreeBSD 8.1 under Xen HVM. They also got quite a few recommendations on WHT. The price is far from being the cheapest, but still a reasonable price for those here who prefer Chuck over Tux :)

Interesting setup I’ll say. From owner’s LinkedIn profile he seems to be pretty technical so hopefully it goes well.
