Would you pay a bit more each month for DDoS protection? After experiencing our last DDoS fiasco, I think a lot of webmasters (do they still use this term??) would be willing to pay a bit more in exchange with peace of mind. Colo-Serv seem to think so. Alexandre from Colo-Serv sent me two offers last week. One is exactly the same as last time — CAD$5.50 for 128MB/15GB/300GB OpenVZ VPS. ToS prohibits the use of IRC there — unless you pay $1 more :)

For $6.50/month, you get a DDoS-protected, IRC-enabled VPS with the following spec:

128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory

15GB storage

300GB/month data transfer

OpenVZ

Direct sign up link. Servers with Canix Datacenter in Montreal, Canada and they own all their equipments. They have been providing premium range of VPS products and got some pretty good reviews from their last post.

With DDoS protection, however, it’s like buying insurance. You pay a bit of premium each month in the hope that it would defend you when the undesirable event occurs. However when the day of reckoning finally arrived, sometimes you just can’t be sure that it actually works! They do have a page explaining the system they use, although I am not too sure whether the same system is deployed for their low cost VPS line.

Incorporated in Canada, and owns all their equipments (although their Premium/Protected VPS range do look like reselling GloboTech’s?) Not much info can be found on WHT and their account there was disabled. Thanks for the support. But do note that being “exclusive offer” to LowEndBox does not mean it is a verified and approved offer here, and a guarantee that the provider will never do a runner :) Just want to make it clear.

Martin from Nix Communications has emailed me this new exclusive offer to LowEndBox readers — Canada based OpenVZ cheap boxes. Two offers here

Offer 1 (sign up link)

128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory

5GB storage

250GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps

$1.99/month or $4.99/Quater

Offer 2 (sign up link)

256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory

10GB storage

500GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps

$3.99/month or $10.99/Quater

Probably the best Canada VPS offers at the moment. Servers are with Canix Data Center at Montreal Canada. Test IP: 67.215.8.226. I believe the cost are in Canadian Dollars. Check previous offers from them for some comments on Nixcom in general. Nix Communications has also been using non-RAID drives on production so just need to remember take regular backups, as a single drive failure would mean sayonara to your data.

Their website is hosted on a server in Vancouver so I assume the VPS’s will be hosted there as well. Their website is incomplete and very limited, and I cannot seem to be able to find a way to make an order. $10 once off setup fee applies to all VPS — which is unique in VPS hosting industry (but not in a good way).

128MB memory

10GB storage

No words on “guaranteed” vs “busrstable” memory. However as it’s OpenVZ + HyperVM based, we’ll assume it takes HyperVM’s recommendation to give twice amount of guranteed to burstable memory, i.e. 256MB.
