UGVPS have been listed once before, and that was back in early November when they were offering a $4.99/Month 1GB OpenVZ VPS in North Carolina, Chicago and UK. Since then, they’ve expanded to Los Angeles, California and now have servers with Quadranet – who are renowned for their connectivity to Asia. At the time, UGVPS received very good feedback on their offer. If you’ve had a service with them, share your experience with us. A further two plans are listed below.

Crystal informs us that this deal has already posted on LowEndTalk. UGVPS offers a 5 day return policy and PayPal is the only accepted method of payment. Lenoir’s datacenter is with Dacentec, Chicago and LA are with ColoCrossing and Newcastle is with Wildcard Networks. Newcastle is the only location that currently supports IPv6 and can be added via ticket. You can check out their full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Took over 6 hours to get a response to my support ticket, I’ve quoted the response below. I realize 60M/s is “not bad” for a budget VPS but posting that it’s capable of 225M/s I/O and not mentioning that that was on a totally empty node is deceptive at the least.

Well this is a shared node. Results will vary from time to time. Also this node was empty when i posted that. Its pretty close to 3/4ths full at this point. Anything over 60MB/s is deemed acceptable to us.

      Thank you,

      Crystal

      Unique Geek – UGVPS

I ran another benchmark around 2pm PST today and it was down to 64.3M/s, way too slow to use it for the project I purchased it for. It’s now 9:20pm PST and it’s at 100M/s but that’s kind of expected this late at night.

      [root@elite ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync; unlink test
      16384+0 records in

      1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 10.7412 s, 100 MB/s

Even this late at night however, I’m not getting the download speed (96.7M/s) she advertised:

      [root@elite ~]# wget -O /dev/null http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test

On a positive note, deployment was amazingly fast; the VM was up and running before Paypal even updated my transaction history, so great job there. Support response time could use some improvement however, and I’m not sure what Crystal considers a full node to be but with every host I’ve been with (and liked) they won’t sell more than 80% of available resources. With the drastic decrease in the I/O speed since this node came online a week and a half ago it’s likely at or above 100%. Don’t expect any major performance from this node and/or host.

My in/out speed on both the Chicago and Los Angeles nodes is still good and hasn’t shown any deterioration since I bought the plans. The in/out speeds are roughly comparable to the in/out speeds I get on Kimsufi’s dedicated servers. %iowait isn’t showing any indication of overloading yet on either server.

Tech support (limited to enabling rDNS, adding quotas) was handled in a matter of minutes both times I contacted them last weekend, and they were professional unlike some highly rated LEB hosts.

Chicago node (the WHT 3GB ram, 4 unthrottled E3-1240V2 cores, for $5.50 monthly “FOREVER!” Christmas special)

Hmm…thanks, good to know the results I’m getting are not typical. I’ll keep checking it over the next day or so; if speed doesn’t improve I’ll see if they can move me to whatever node you’re getting those results on. Any idea if the offer you signed up for is still valid? I’m not finding it on LEB/LET?

          December 28, 2012 @ 6:40 am
      • Mike,

I just want to clarify that the speed test that i posted was done in LA not Chicago. Cachefly doesn’t always deliver the best download speeds in every location. For instance Our UK node only gets 20ish MB/s on Cachefly but when i downloaded something from another location i got about 50-60MB/s. Also this is a single thread test. Unless the download location is pretty much on top of you you will not max out the connection.

“Any idea if the offer you signed up for is still valid? ”

It was a WHT offer. The $5.50 price isn’t available any more but you can still get the plan for $5.99 (if ordered by 12/28) or $6.50 if ordered by 1/1). You need to contact sales after ordering to get the reduced rates (the “regular” sale price is $6.99)

tyvvm! I’m a LEB virgin so while I’d heard of WHT & checked reviews there before I wasn’t aware they have offers posted as well. Much appreciated! I’m used to fully managed hosting but decided I’m comfortable enough to branch out on my own…but still a learning curve ;) I just asked Crystal if I can be moved to that plan, hopefully we can get this resolved.

The deal is quite good on paper but I must say this is the first time I’ve been bitterly disappointed with a purchase of a VPS.

It’s very unresponsive and even when I simply go to see what is happening on my VPS (with VNC viewer) the screen takes quite a while to refresh. I own 5 other VPS’s and they are all smooth and responsive so I’m not sure why this one is so bad for me – I’ve got the Chicago one with 2gb RAM.

Shame really because my friend bought one in another location (from UGVPS) and says it’s the best one he’s ever purchased. :(

Hi Crystal. The day after I posted that the unresponsiveness died down a little, it’s not so bad now. I didn’t change anything so I’m not sure what the problem was, I don’t think it was my connection because I logged into my other VPS’s and they were all very responsive at the time. Doesn’t matter now anyway, it’s working alright now so that’s what counts. :)

      • Crystal, Awesome IO! that is too luxurious. An IO at ~45M/s is too good for my websites. Can you guarantee you will never put me down below that? I am asking because a provider (f.host) guarantees me a minimum IO at 25MB/s, however my VPS have only ~15MB/s.

Sorry I didn’t see this comment sooner.

If you are still experiencing any issues just make a ticket and we will take a look, but I’m sure it was temporary and already resolved by now =P

      Thanks!

I bought the VPS – LEB/LET 2048 UK and I’m extremely disappointed. The VPS has so much downtime it’s unusable. Crystal Ive payed you 13 months hosting, can you please refund the 12 months hosting I payed you on the 5th Feb? The first payment of 1 months hosting I made 2 weeks ago you can keep, but I would like the other payment I made to you back. Thank you.
