Thanks to Luke who notified us about their plan changes. Prgmr.com has released their new Xen VPS plans. The disk space and monthly data transfer amount has shrinked for their $5/month 64MB VPS. However for an extra dollar per month, you can get:

128MB memory
3GB storage
20GB/month data transfer
CentOS 5 or Debian 4

Their new server seems to be at Fremont with HE.net (one of my favourite DC). The amount of data per month is a bit limiting although the overage is at only 10 cents/GB. As the motto of Prgmr.com is “We don’t assume you are stupid.”, this is a strictly unmanaged service.

Codev Technology - $6 OpenVZ VPS

Spotted this New Zealand VPS provider, Codev Technology, who has OpenVZ-based VPS hosting from $6/month. You get

64MB guaranteed / 128MB burstable
1GB storage
1Mbps unmetered

Their website is hosted on a server in Vancouver so I assume the VPS’s will be hosted there as well. Their website is incomplete and very limited, and I cannot seem to be able to find a way to make an order. $10 once off setup fee applies to all VPS — which is unique in VPS hosting industry (but not in a good way).

UBHosting - $4.99 Canada VPS with 128MB RAM

Via this WHT deal. UBHosting is a Toronto based hosting company running its own equipment since 2004 (i.e. good sign). It has some VPS plans, although the cheapest one, UBH-VPS Mini, is not available on their website and you need to use the link from WHT to order it (for this week only). For $4.99/month, you get

HyperVM / OpenVZ

No words on “guaranteed” vs “busrstable” memory. However as it’s OpenVZ + HyperVM based, we’ll assume it takes HyperVM’s recommendation to give twice amount of guranteed to burstable memory, i.e. 256MB.

WebSpaceDepot - $6.94 Xen VPS with 128MB

WebSpaceDepot looks like a reputable company — been in business since 1997. Their data center is located in Palm Beach, FL. You also get some discount if you prepay for 12 months. Looks like a rather solid choice when you compare it with many failed VPS companies that I’ve reported before.

We covered RapidXen before but unfortunately their $5/month 64MB Xen VPS is no longer available. Instead they have updated their Xen VPS plans with a base VPS that starts with $7.99/month. However if you prepay for a year you’ll get 25% off (promotion ends on 13 Nov 2008), which brings the price down to around $5.62/month. You get:

Their servers are in Fremont, CA with HE, or in Chicago, IL with Steadfast.

Via this WHT deal, QuillHost is offering the following VPS for $5/month.

As the control panel provided is HyperVM, I am assuming the virtualization technology used here is OpenVZ. You can also apply some coupon code (see linked WHT page) to get double RAM + space or 20% off lifetime (bringing it down to $4/month). IP of the main web site is at Colo 4 Jax in Jacksonville, FL, and I assume the hosted VPS will also be there as well.

Alright. Now it’s the nitpicking time — why you might not want to consider this host:

There’s no website other than a copy of Client Exec that let you order VPS packages.
According to WHOIS, the domain was created on 2 Oct 2008 — less than a month old.
Contact information in WHOIS is privacy-masked. Most dodgy operations have their contact information masked as well.
From the interaction between the owner and customers on that WHT post, I doubt the owner knows exactly what he is doing.

Hooks-PC - $5.95 OpenVZ VPS with 128MB

Via this WHT offer, Hooks-PC is yet another cheap OpenVZ/HyperVM VPS provider who ventured into the sub-$7 VPS category. It’s cheapest offer, the $5.95/month “Tiny” offers:

Seems to be offering a lot of space for $5.95 (great as a backup box) but then again this is OpenVZ so you might not actually be able to use that much as the host oversells. Servers are in Houston, Texas, inside Limestone Networks‘ IP range. Doing a social network look up reveals the owner is still in high schools so again — buyers beware (especially during the examination time

It’s OpenVZ/HyperVM based so you can run LxAdmin on it. Domain has existed for a while and currently registered by someone in Pakistan. Not sure where the servers are. Their main site is at Kansas City, but their NS are at Dallas.
