BuyVM - $15/Year 128MB OpenVZ VPS is Back

BuyVM It took Francisco a while (no worries, we can wait!), but previous offer from BuyVM is back! Francisco has restocked their servers and you can now order from their website again. For $15/year you can get the following VPS:

  • 128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers are with HE.net in Fremont. I have actually ordered one this time — 256MB/512MB memory, 30GB, 1TB/month data for $35/year to backup my production servers in Fremont. Missed out last time due to procrastination :P It allows full burst to 2 cores of Xeon L5420 and seems to be pretty fast so far. It also comes with 16 IPv6 addresses.

@Matrix – If you’re needing help just come by our IRC :)

    September 20, 2010 @ 11:51 pm
  36. Beny, what guide are you using? I was using http://vpsnoc.com/blog/how-to-setup-a-vpn-server-on-a-centos-vps-instantly/ then used SNAT for masquerading (as advised by buyvm support) as I was having this error http://pastie.org/1168346. I never had issue using that guide on Quickweb VPS before. I can open ssh but can’t surf/ping websites.

Francisco, I actually had support ticket asking to execute the commands state on that vpn guide but staff insists me to use SNAT.

and oh, I’m not a fan of IRC. :p

    September 21, 2010 @ 3:11 am
  37. @Matrix – It was probably a XEN vps which works different.

Anyways, MASQURADE isn’t supported on our VM’s yet, so that’s why we say to use SNAT like people have been :)

    Are you using OpenVPN-AS?

    Francisco

    September 21, 2010 @ 3:24 am
  38. Beny:

@matrix, I’m using debian, my tutorial is my personal blog (beny.co.cc)
But I think the configuration is same, the different is only the technic to install (in debian using apt-get , in centos using yum).

    September 21, 2010 @ 3:35 am
  39. It’s OpenVZ.

    I understand.

It’s OpenVPN GUI is what I am using.

    Francisco

    September 21, 2010 @ 8:09 pm
  53. me:

    Got it.

I guess provisioning takes a bit longer than usual?

    September 21, 2010 @ 9:42 pm
  54. setups get processed every 20 – 30 minutes or so. We’ve been having a weird bug where solus randomly chooses to not provision certain people :(

    Francisco

    September 21, 2010 @ 9:49 pm
  55. me:

Hm, do I need to have to open a ticket or shall I wait? I order like an hour ago.

    September 21, 2010 @ 10:17 pm
  56. Jeff:

Got my order in just now. Missed out on availability yesterday. Thankfully got my order in this time. :)

    September 21, 2010 @ 11:55 pm
  57. Hi Jeff,

Check your IP, if it starts with 208 you got a miss configure so check inside of solus for your actual IP. When I was binding all of our new ARIN’d IP space, I must have slipped and just never noticed it.

    Francisco

    September 22, 2010 @ 12:18 am
  58. Jeff:

Thanks Francisco! My order is still pending. I’ll check it out as soon as it is provisioned.

    September 22, 2010 @ 12:24 am
  59. Hi Jeff,

If it’s still pending you’ll get a correct IP :)

We had a hand full of setups get the incorrect address.

    Francisco

    September 22, 2010 @ 12:25 am
  60. Jeff:

@Francisco – Account was provisioned, but something went awry with the process as the VPS wasn’t actually online. Dropped a ticket over to support and it is up and running now. Just an FYI in case you’re still debugging the process.

    September 22, 2010 @ 2:25 am
  61. rost:

What’s the price for the second year?

    September 22, 2010 @ 6:14 am
  62. $15 :)

We’ve never up’d our prices on either company – ever.

    Francisco

    September 22, 2010 @ 6:36 am
  63. @Francisco

    What does this mean?
    “No Management or Support”

I understand that its un-managed but why no support? Can you explain?

    September 22, 2010 @ 6:56 am
  64. Asim,

There is support to help with issues that are on our end and giving advise, but we don’t staff people around to help install things for you.

We have our IRC community (and a forum soon) that already provides community based support. I also spend a good part of my day in the channel interacting with customers of ours – be it in general joking around, nerd chat or even helping them with things.

The reason for the writing is to not have to deal with the possible fall out that could come from a user that hasn’t a clue how to work with linux. We’ve refunded more than a few customers in our days as from day one they needed lots of help.

    Francisco

    September 22, 2010 @ 7:04 am
  65. @Francisco Thanks :) that clarifies everything. Going to order now

    September 22, 2010 @ 7:13 am
  66. manoj:

node09 is down for past 30 minutes.

    September 22, 2010 @ 7:14 am
  67. Asim,

You’re welcome to join us on IRC for a lot of laughs and direct interaction from most of the staff. You have to have a easy going sense of humor, though ;)

    Fran

    September 22, 2010 @ 7:15 am
  68. We’re checking over node09 now, it’ll be a few as it spins up users :)

  70. Hi there,

We know, we’ve found a crash bug in OpenVZ that we’re reporting right now as we speak. For now we’ve stopped it from happening again, but it can be triggered by a user and will panic a node instantly.

Each time node09 took a dive we saw it and addressed it instantly, though.

    Thanks,

    Francisco

We’ll have stock sometime in the morning.

    September 23, 2010 @ 7:06 am
  77. node09 is the only one suffering that issue.

We’ve applied an additional fix since it seems that there is more than just 1 – 2 apps triggering it.

  79. You’re right, that’s why we filed a bug report and have had someone waiting for a developer in the OpenVZ bugzilla & IRC channel to try to resolve it.

The fix we’ve applied stops it from happening but it’s by no means a ‘clean’ fix.

    We’re addressing it, I promise :)

    September 23, 2010 @ 8:14 pm
  84. Hi Matrix,

There shoulda been a notice/announcement about node08 having a RAID driver conflict. We’re nearly done adjusting it and it’ll be back to normal :) 06, 07 & 10 aren’t showing this issue so we think it’s possibly just an old firmware.

    Thanks,

    1. can I enable quick backup via vps manager (BuyVM-256MB) ? (coz if I want to upgrade to 512, as what you had told to me that I have to backup it first).
I already clicked via vps manager, but it said my vps is not enabled yet

    2. I checked via whatismyipaddress.com for my ip 199.19.224.78, the result is

@Fransisco, how do I get quick backup in my vps manager ?

    September 24, 2010 @ 12:07 pm
  95. @Jason – What seems to be the issue? We’ve kept a very close eye on all of our gear and everything has been performing fantastic since we changed out our drivers for older ones (go figure).

@David – Ya, both of our subnets are fresh from ARIN so they aren’t geolocated properly yet, but hopefully soon :(

@Beny – I’ll see about enabling quick backups. You don’t need it to upgrade, though, the upgrade usually doesn’t even need a reboot :)

  109. @Matrix – What Centos version do you have? I’ve upgraded the original Centos 5.3 from BuyVM 128MB OpenVZ to Centos 5.5 32bit before installing Kloxo.

I have had that experience on other OpenVZ machine (not BuyVM) It was Centos 5.4, and I have to reboot the VPS everytime I finish installing something. What I did was reinstall the OS and update it (yum update) before installing kloxo. It also happens when I tried to install kloxo to a 64bit Centos.

    September 24, 2010 @ 10:23 pm

I want to know if [node 9] will reboot again
and do you fix the problem yet

    September 25, 2010 @ 5:54 am
  116. No nodes will ever reboot unless:

    – There is a physical error (RAID issue, etc)
    – Planned reboot (we’ll give notice on the network status page of our helpdesk)
    – kernel panic (very uncommon)

With that being said, node09 has been fine since our last adjustment. We do hope to apply a new kernel update but given the lock ups it suffered this week we’ll be postponing that for a while yet.

Thanks for the interest and I apologize for the headaches caused

We’ve finally got node08, node11, node12 happy. While the kernel thing did help, we ended up simply doing a chassis swap since it seems this one is going to get an RMA. I’ll be posting a copy of the email/ticket we have with HE over this as well as a full write up in the next couple hours.

  199. JP:

Got my new VPS with BuyVM (after about 12 hours wait, which is acceptable – though it would be good if they could “automate” the setup like some other providers).

While the ping times are good (should be, as I am in Asia and servers are with HE.net), the node is very slow :(. There seem to be more cores and more cache than some of the other VPS I have got (burst.net, virpus, others) – but BuyVM VPS is one of the slowest. There is a distinct delay in typing/ putty screen refresh :(.

Don’t take this as negative feedback yet – I will file a ticket with them to see if they can fix it and update here.

    cheers,
    JP

One important feedback, posting here as people should know. The BuyVM control panel login page is not secure (uses http, not https). I think you should change this.

Of the 5-6 providers I have tried so far, 2 did not have secure login – BuyVM and YDGH.

    regards,

  204. For what it’s worth, what I do for the BuyVM SolusVM login is just change the url to https, and it works with a warning (looks like a self signed certificate, which is fine for me).

  226. Linda,

When it said you were on 10, did it show you as online or offline in solus? :) If it showed you offline, it means you were actually on 08 and your solus simply wasn’t updated. I know you talked to Shane yesterday and that’s when he brought it to my attention. The only thing that happened yesterday was an update to solus telling it you were on 08.

The best I can offer is putting you on some of our original nodes since you’ve been jumping around nodes already. The other nodes (nodes 1 – 5) had anywhere from 30 – 40 day uptimes (I think most of them are still around that right now).

We’ve released some gear from another project to buyvm so we are using the same equipment we did as the first nodes for now until we get things settled with the L5420’s we got.

I’m more than willing to apply a credit to your VM’s so then your own customers won’t be as angry, just let me know.

i even gave up my space so that you could free up HD for better/smooth operation, you probably don’t remember what I did. Because the server was up and down so many times, I had to buy other vps from other

I’ve finally created a ticket (#519605) after some Internal Server Error.
Francisco, do You think Node11 is a good node ? Try walking in our shoes…
We’ve paid for a VPS that has a very low uptime :(
I’m sure You’re trying to do the best to solve this problem and make your customers happy but when I will really use this VPS for my project 6-7 hours uptime will make me move immediately to another provider…

      October 6, 2010 @ 7:31 am
      • Node11 has been corrected as far as we can see. We’re still installing a new node as we said just in case, as well as giving it a hardware boost to a Xeon 5520, but we will be live migrating users so you won’t even notice a reboot if we can help it.

The ‘internal error’ part may have been from when backups were running, our primary webserver also handles advertisement handling for some communities we own/manage.

We know last weeks batch of nodes have been very moody and we’re working extremely quickly to resolve all of the quirks that come up. As I also mentioned to Linda, you’re welcome to email me directly if you wish to voice anything else on your mind :)

I went with this offer earlier today as my first ever VPS. After ordering, my box was ready and running in less than 5 minutes. Next, I did the WordPress/NginX/PHP/MySql botstrap (http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/wordpress-cheap-vps-lowendscript/) which went very smoothly and took less than 3 minutes. So far so good!

I’m just stuck as I don’t know how to work the rest out. Can anyone tell me where my wordpress install is located when I browse ftp?

I can’t understand, my vps on node11 still shows offline,
now you guys start selling new 128mb vps again?

Does this mean we are not important, and can be just ignored, our hard-earned moeny and time can be wasted?

Now you keep receiving more money before rectify any issues on old nodes?

    Francisco, please advise.

my ticket is 530837, if there’s no any solutions or reasons, I’ll look buyvm as a scam company I’m afraid.

I want full refund on all of my vps, including credit, immediately.
    I’m sick of it now.

same here, ticket #190284. my patience is limited. as long as the issues with node11 are not fixed potential customers might want to reconsider their options.

    October 8, 2010 @ 4:56 pm
  246. PS:

Seems a lot of troubles with node11, or is that the case with all of the nodes?

    October 8, 2010 @ 5:52 pm
    • Gary:

From what I’ve read, half the nodes are having trouble. Hardware and software.

You can’t expect much in the way of performance for $15/year, but you can expect stability, and any problems to be sorted quickly. Seems to me like a few people are really losing patience with BuyVM’s apparent inability to make things work properly.

  249. We’re already underway on the 11 move, it started a few hours ago.

We have node06 & 07 doing the same, things have been running great on the new ones.

    :)

Finally we’re almost out of this annoying pit!

Francisco Dias @ good, since you are doing something, wish you luck.
now I sent 3-4 tickets, none of them was answered.
Are you ignoring me or don’t care about request/complains?

    October 8, 2010 @ 8:24 pm
  251. No Linda,

I’m sorry, i’ve had to pull Anthony off tickets a bit to have him help me finish this. We aren’t ignoring any tickets purposely, just we’re trying to keep up with everything until this mess is cleaned (we’re close!)

Here is the reply to my 2 tickets:

    ——–

    Hello,

I’m sorry that you have had a bumpy ride, but we’ve been having quite the gong show cleaning up after the following nodes:

    – node06
    – node07
    – node11
    – node08

All were provisioned on new equipment we had purchased that all seem to suffer from the same issues, conflicts with RAID cards
(all of them), random kernel panics (node11), etc.

We’ve been doing heavy testing and trying to cleanup, which has caused us to move some of the stress off to our older nodes (nodes 1 – 5).

We currently have all of the marked bad nodes either migrating everyone off (nodes 6 & 7 are doing this as we speak), node08 was migrated
earlier in the week and node11 is currently doing a migration after, yet again, another kernel panic.

The node07 panic’s you may have had a few weeks ago are due to an easily triggerable kernel panic in all .18 based OVZ kernels. We found
the cause and as of the new 70.7 kernel already in testing, it has been fixed.

We hope to have everything balanced off and running as it should by the end of the weekend, hopefully more like the end of today

Any users suffering issues and wishes for a credit for it, you’re welcome to reply to this ticket and we’ll discuss what is possible. On
average we’re giving half to a full month of credit for the bumpy ride to people on the newer gear.

I’ll admit, I’ve been having to pull my support guys off tickets some to get them to help me, but we’ve always been asking people to drop
by IRC or even MSN me if they can so then we can discuss with them any issues we may be having a bit easier.

Whenever a node blows out (like node11 for instance) it causes us to get a bombardment of tickets and with myself and James being busy
working on the actual equipment (James being actually in Fremont for this), it has left only 2 – 3 people manning tickets.

As I said, I truely do apologize if it hasn’t worked to your expectations, you and I both are far from pleased with it. With that being
said, we are resolving it though and given the rate the vzmigrates are going, if you still want to see how the new nodes work, you’ll be
on them by dinner time, GMT -8

would you please answer the ticket #452819?
    Is there anybody?

    October 9, 2010 @ 4:17 pm
  254. Good morning Linda!

I’ll have Anthony check on it.

For what it’s worth, the node replacement has been completed for all 3 problematic nodes :)

Users on node11 wanting proof, cat /proc/cpuinfo ;)

We’ve been hearing positive responses from people on both node06 & 07 so hurrah!

    Thank you!

  259. Linda,

Is your ping fixed now? We found that 08 didn’t get some of the kernel adjustments we give the rest of the nodes. We’ve rebotoed and upgraded the kernel as well since a new version is out. Our tests have shown fixed download speeds amongst latency being correct

    Thanks!

    Fran

Oh come on, you don’t expect them to support your stupid Windows PPTP error numbers, do you.
VPS is unmanaged with no support beyond the VPS functionality. Rest is your problem, ssh into it and figure out yourself what’s wrong with your vpn.
