Via this forum post, thanks to RelativeDesign. LaxHost is currently having a WHT special with a $5 OpenVZ VPS. The specification is:

$5/month is very good price for a VPS with 30GB storage (despite the fact that it’s probably oversold due to OpenVZ). Seems to be based in Norway, but the servers are in Houston with The Planet, if the VPS are hosted in the same DC as their main website.

I am a bit surprised that there are actually 40-50 visitors to this small website, and many have emailed me the low end stuff that they have found. I think a good way to build the community (yes, due to financial crisis and imminent recession, there’s actually a community for running low-end servers) would be setting up a forum where budget-conscious admins can talk about low end stuff.

So here we have it. Low End Box Forums.

Currently running barebone bbPress, which I haven’t yet bothered to set up a theme for it. Dump stuff there, and let’s get the talk going.

Yup. 512MB burstable memory — it’s almost too high-end for me. 1TB of data transfer per month?! I might need to set up a zillion blog sites like this to use that up. The DC is actually not in New York but in Los Angeles. You do have to prepay for 12 months though — but for $60/year it’s still a great value.

Actually. The same deal came up on around 10 days ago, and I signed up on the 21st. I also added 256MB more memory for $27.50/year, and it runs Ubuntu 8.04. The setup was pretty quick — 22 minutes for me after paid by PayPal. It has access to a Core 2 Quad Q9300 (i.e. fast), but it’s sitting there idling at the moment, until I can find something for it to do.
